"The Dog"
by Roddy Doyle
Rating: 6.8
Short story about a middle-aged Irish couple, Joe and Mary, who get a dog. She’d been gone for a couple of hours. He watched her taking off her coat. The ear had been the start of it. Years ago now. Mary had been kissing him.

sucks to lose stuff.
it starts strong and is good up until the dog is lost. Overall it seems like a typical story of loss with some bad luck mixed in. I didn't really buy the whole thing about several prank calls on their missing-pet flyers.
a favorite line:
She smacked him on the back, a loud whack that didn't hurt but shocked him. She hit him again. More a thump this time—his shoulder.
